School of Nursing to eliminate nursing program

by Frederick J. Templeton

The Board of Trustees has convened this week to accept or reject a proposal to eliminate the nursing major from the School of Nursing.

"We are finding that it is simply not economically feasible. We have a lower enrollment than the previous year, and we must decide whether or not to continue this major," said Jenifer Love-Mewitt, Dean of the School of Nursing.

Some students have pointed out that nursing is a central component of the School of Nursing.

"To eliminate that major is to eliminate the core of the program. Such a move would rip out the very heart of the School," said Dan Bastian, Senior of Nursing.

"Is it even possible to have a School of Nursing without a nursing program?"

Love-Mewitt thinks it is possible.

"Of course, it would change the shape of the School of Nursing, but we must decide what will identify us. Will we be identified by our stated mission, or the financial bottom line? The bottom line, of course."

Students with an interest in medicine need not fear. The administration plans to keep a minor in nursing in place.
